HSBC is the world's second largest global bank and financial services company. It is headquartered in Canary Warf, London.  It has 7,500 offices around the world and is located in 87 countries. It was founded by Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and acquired the UK-based Midland Bank. Midland Bank Plc. was one of the Big Four banking groups in the United Kingdom for most of the 20th century.

The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation was founded by a Scotsman named Thomas Sutherland who wanted a bank operating on "sound Scottish banking principles. Operations began in Hong Kong in March of 1865 and in Shanghai in April of the same year.

In fear of a Japanese invasion prior to WWII they moved the headquarters to London in 1941. In 1955 it formed the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation of California 1955 and acquired The British Bank of the Middle East and the Mercantile Bank (of India) in 1959. In 1980 it acquired 51% of Marine Midland Bank in the United States and continued to expand and expanded into Canada in 1981 with the creation of Hong Kong Bank of Canada  and in 1986 moved into Australia with Hong Kong Bank of Australia Limited. In1987 they expanded the bank's ownership of Marine Midland Bank to 100% and acquired an almost 15% stake in Midland Bank in the United Kingdom.

They also have major operations in Bangladesh, India, Japan, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

In the United States it provides credit cards under a variety of brands including various brands, including The GM Card, the Union Plus (“UP”) credit card, Household Bank, Orchard Bank and HSBC branded credit cards.
